Two strong earthquakes recently struck Mindanao, the Philippines' second-largest island. At first, there were worries about a big tsunami.
The US Geological Survey detected a 7.6 magnitude quake late Saturday, followed by a 6.4 one. Meanwhile, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported them as 6.9 and 6.4 magnitude.
Luckily, the US Tsunami Warning System later said the danger of a tsunami had passed. They mentioned there might be some small changes in sea levels in a few coastal areas.
Before this confirmation, folks living in coastal parts of Surigao Del Sur and Davao Oriental in the Philippines were advised to move to higher ground.
Right after the first earthquake around 10:37 PM local time on Saturday, people hurried out of buildings and gathered in open spaces in many towns.
Fortunately, there haven't been any immediate reports of damage or injuries.
In Japan, NHK, the public broadcaster, initially warned of potential one-meter-high waves reaching Japan but later assured that no damage was expected.
