Parts of Speech
Parts of speech are categories assigned to words, based on their grammatical function within a sentence. The main parts of speech include:
Noun: a person, place, thing, or idea (e.g. "dog," "city," "book")
Pronoun: a word that takes the place of a noun (e.g. "he," "she," "it")
Verb: a word that describes an action or state of being (e.g. "run," "is," "were")
Adjective: a word that describes a noun or pronoun (e.g. "happy," "green," "big")
Adverb: a word that describes a verb, adjective, or other adverb (e.g. "quickly," "very," "well")
Preposition: a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence (e.g. "in," "on," "under")
Conjunction: a word that connects words, phrases, or clauses (e.g. "and," "or," "but")
Interjection: a word or phrase that expresses strong emotion (e.g. "Wow!," "Oh no!," "Congratulations!")
These are the main categories of part of speech, but there are many subcategories and exceptions, depending on the specific language.
